The Whole Scoop
The Obesity Epidemic

I was flipping through this month's issue of Organic Connections, a magazine from one of the supplement companies (Peter Gillham's Natural Vitality) that I carry at my office. In this issues, I read an article and statistics on The Obesity Epidemic. The statistics* were so alarming to me, that I wanted to share some of them with you. I believe that it is first with awareness that change begins....

1. Increase in childhood obesity in the past 25 years: 2.3 to 3.3- fold

2. Estimated increase, in the past 20 years, in the prevalence of childhood diabetes: 10-fold

3. Increase in per capita consumption of soft drinks, 1950's to today: 500%

4. Amount that one additional soft drink per day increases a child's risk for obesity: 60%

5. Percentage of school districts that have contracts with soft drink companies, allowing them to sell soft drinks on school premises: 50%

6. Number of food ads viewed by the average child each year: 10,000

7. Percentage of these that advertise fast food, soft drinks, candy, or sugared cereals: 95%

8. Estimated annual amount spent on food advertising aimed at US children: 10 billion

9. Increase in risk for childhood obesity per hour of daily television viewing: 12%

10. Decrease in risk for childhood obesity per hour of exercise: 10%

11. Annual direct costs of obesity to the American economy: $70 billion

Healthy Bites
This Month's Pick: Cherries

Oh, how I love cherries! Compact, juicy, and colorful, cherries are nicely supplied with nutrients, notably pectin (a soluble fiber that helps control blood cholesterol levels), vitamin C, beta-carotene, some potassium, and a number of phytochemicals.

Cherries have a short growing season (typically from June-August) so stock up at your local Farmers Market today. Cherries can be washed, pitted, and frozen so that they can be enjoyed year-round. Although nothing beats the sweet juiciness of a perfectly ripe summer cherry!

Food For Thought
Client Spotlight-A Note from a Happy Mom

I want to thank you so much for helping Lisa get better. She is here with me in New York City this week - and I'm thrilled with her good health, her new eating "style" and her attitude about whole and organic foods.

Your program of healthy eating and learning to choose the right foods has given her a life back.  She's quite a different young woman today than the one who walked into your office back in early October.  Thank you so much for your guidance.

Thanks again for helping my daughter get healthy again!

Sincerely,
C.G.
